History of the Club

North Downs Archery Club began life as Edenbridge Archery Club, which was started by Tony Harris in April 1974. At the time he was the owner of The Artisan, a craft shop in Edenbridge High Street. He was also a member of “The Red Seal”, a medieval society which specialised in giving Royalist and Cromwellian displays. He was also a field and target archer of some repute and later donated the trophy known as The St Sebastian trophy to the club, now known as the “Tony Harris Trophy”.

Founding members of the club who assisted Tony were Ray Marsh, Harvey Whitworth, Sidney Richardson, John and Sheila Ticehurst, and John Wood.

The club has used several venues over the years, including Eden Valley School, Edenbridge Leisure Centre, back to Eden Valley School and now Matchpoint Lifeline Fitness Centre, Hurst Green, Oxted. We are still affiliated to the Kent Archery Association, despite the fact that we now shoot in Surrey!

After several years in Hurst Green it was agreed to change the name of the club to North Downs Archery Club.
